Before the next power failure, you need to know this:
The typical generator – one without a voltage regulator and filter – produces “dirty” power that is not safe for your computer. If you plug in your PC or server this will seriously damage the computer. A UPS is not enough protection.
A laptop has some protection from the power control built into the cord so if the unit isn’t your primary data storage, and isn’t highly valuable, you are probably OK using it. Do make sure you have an external backup of all the data on the laptop.
While we’re on the topic: Any computer that stores valuable data should have a UPS power supply and should be backed up regularly.
