Read This Before You Buy a New Laptop or Netbook

Thinking about getting a new laptop or netbook? While it’s fun to get the latest shiny new gizmo, I don’t want you to be disappointed when you bring it to the office and try to use it.  Know your ABCs first!

The ABCs of Shopping for a Laptop or Netbook

A.  Two questions you must answer before shopping

1. What am I going to use it for? Is it for work or for play? Will you be editing lots of Word documents on it or mostly surfing the web? Is it going to mainly stay stationed on your desk or will you be carrying it around all the time? Do you need a big screen, or do you want it to be ultra portable?

To comfortably carry it around,  limit your size to 13 inches and under. Some 15 inch models might be OK, but  make sure you actually pick up look the model you want and so you won’t be surprised when you start lugging it. Most people feel that 13 inch laptops are the happy medium – good for travel and big enough to use all day at work on your desk.

2. What do I need it to do for me? Do you need a lot of hard drive space and memory? Is the speediest internet possible a must? Is gaming important to you?

B.  Four specifications to demand

1. A Dual-core CPU
2. 2 Gigs of ram if running Windows 07, 1 GB on netbook
3. A minimum of 160 GB hard drive
4. Wireless 802.11 Wi-Fi

C.  Two important cautions about software

1. If you are going to connect it to a server, be sure to get the Windows 7 or XP Professional version.

2. If you are going to install application software, check its hardware requirements.  While most netbook screens measure 1024 x 600, some applications require 1024 x 768. If your application doesn’t fit, you won’t see the buttons at the bottom of the screen.

D. Where to get product reviews

PC World, PCMag, Cnet and Consumer Reports provide reviews. This article has some good points about netbooks.

E.  If you’re buying now, you’re in luck – prices have dropped

The ever-competitive laptop market has allowed prices to come down – or at least plateau pretty nicely. Many companies are now upgrading the features in their hottest models without budging the price at all.

* You can shop around and find a decent netbook for anywhere near $299 – $399.
* The latest editions of laptops cost $700-$900 and feature great battery life, LED screens and more. Anything that costs $999 or above is considered super-premium and will be sure to make you smile with all its bells and whistles. If you don’t have that kind of money, don’t fret, the laptops in the normal price range still have plenty of tricks up their sleeves for you!
* MLANS is a Lenovo distributor. Ask me for a price quote before you buy.

F. One more question… Should you buy the warranty?

I always say yes to this one. But, when it comes to warranties (whether it be Mac or PC) your best bet is usually to purchase the one that comes directly from the manufacturer, not the store.  Lenovo – popular with many businesses – is outstanding for warranty service.

Happy Shopping!
